THE SCOOP ON DESIGN + TDG

Embracing Change

The beginning of a new year is a natural time for reflection and setting new goals. An avid list maker, I find it incredibly satisfying to strike through a task, awash in pride and accomplishment with each new tick. Come December though, I'm faced with the reality of the tasks and goals that didn't get checked off.

Yet with this change, I'm equally energized by a renewed sense of what can be accomplished in the coming year. With a clean slate we can reassess things that didn't work and focus on what did. One way we do this at TDG is through our client satisfaction surveys. Our business is built on referrals and reviews are invaluable insight as we strive to provide exceptional service for continued success.

A new year also comes with fresh looks and we're excited to share some of what's trending. Cheers to a year filled with continued growth, prosperity and wellness.

Trending in 2024

Last month we shared popular kitchen trends including smart appliances, lighting and color. These easily extend to the whole house, or office for that matter. In addition to the bluesy mood this year, earth tones are seeing a surge, led by Pantone's Peach Fuzz with its flesh tone hinting at the need for human connection. Earthy browns, rich terracottas, and deep oranges will take center stage.

After years of gold and black dominating metal hardware and accessories, Holly Hunt tells AD PRO that she foresees "bright aluminum and silver gaining popularity in 2024". Choose brushed chrome or nickel as they give a more polished and sophisticated look. Cool silver tones and bold chrome are expected to grow in 2024.

Patterns will emerge this year as well. In tile we'll see a modern spin on the classic subway tile by stacking it vertically as Todd has done in his newly remodeled primary bath pictured above. And fractals will have a major moment. These infinitely complex patterns marry scientific theory to design with how shapes and geometric design appeal to the brain. Stay tuned for furniture featuring this aesthetic from our travels to High Point this Spring.

Lastly, there has been a growing trend to design for aging in place. One client has tasked us to create a multi-generational home. We transformed the first floor into an open concept plan and turned the existing family room into a first floor en suite for the client's aging parents. The en suite includes the bedroom, a universal bathroom and a small sitting area. Ramps and railings were thoughtfully added in this project. Dropping the plans here and we can't wait to show you the final design. Stay tuned!

A Year of Giving

Giving back to the community is at the heart of everything we do and this year was especially big-hearted. In December we raised more than $8,000 for our annual Toys For Todd fundraiser benefiting Marine Toys For Tots Foundation.

Last month we also partnered with our friends at the Baker | McGuire DC Showroom for the Washington Design Center’s Annual Holiday Fete, graciously sponsored by Home & Design Magazine and benefiting Children's National Hospital. The showroom was transformed into the romantic world of Moulin Rouge and it was a night to remember! The night was topped off by the Washington Design Center's 50th anniversary. celebration.

This past year Todd was honored to be part of the planning committee for the Washington Metro ASID chapter Gala and was asked to chair next year's event. Todd also sits on the board of VisArts in Montgomery County. And finally, throughout the year we continue to support Nourish Now's food recovery initiative and have donated nearly $4,000 since the pandemic on behalf of each new client.
